Schoolchildren, community leaders unite to celebrate veterans

Alvin Sides may not have felt his best on Thursday, Nov. 9, but he still attended an event held in his honor. The 92-year-old World War II paratrooper and Baptist DeSoto patient was front and center at the hospital’s annual Veterans Day event. So was 84-year-old Korean War veteran and Baptist DeSoto volunteer Joan Davis, who sat next to Alvin.

The veterans enjoyed patriotic music and tributes from Baptist DeSoto CEO and Administrator James Huffman and Mississippi State Senator David Parker. Center Hill Elementary School students then serenaded them with a special performance.

The event ended with a special awards presentation for three DeSoto County Schools. Baptist DeSoto presented donations to OverPark, Pleasant Hill and Center Hill Elementary schools for collecting the most “Shoeboxes for Soldiers.” Mid-South Project Package will send the boxes – filled with toiletries and snacks –to DeSoto County troops stationed overseas.

The celebration is one way Baptist DeSoto thanks Alvin, Joan and the many brave men and women who made tremendous sacrifices to protect the American Dream.
