Baptist Memphis ICU recognized for top performance

This year, Baptist Memphis’ ICU team was recognized with “The Top Team Performance Award – East Coast Region” as part of the ICU Liberation Performance Improvement Collaborative.

The ICU liberation project started in November 2015, and Baptist Memphis was one of the 77 hospitals chosen to participate in this groundbreaking collaborative. Jeff Wright, MD, Carole Schuh, RN, and Maria Zhorne, PharmD, served as the group’s core project coordinators.

“The ABCDEF bundle has been a great tool in the ICU.  With this, we have become more focused on looking at patient care in a new way.  Not only do we strive to provide excellent critical care to our patients but we also focus on getting our patients awake and mobilizing quickly so they can return to their best functional level,” said Teresa Massey, RN.

The purpose was to ensure successful implementation of the ABCDEF bundle. ABCDEF represents specific care steps:

Baptist Technology Services’ Informatics team played a key role in helping to develop the technology needed to support the care model.

During the last 18 months, Baptist Memphis ICU patients have experienced:

  • Less delirium – 1 day versus 5 days
  • Less time in “coma level” sedation – 1 day versus 7 days

“Implementation of ICU liberation in the ICU and Neuro ICU has improved outcomes, communication among providers and with families, teamwork, as well as nursing and physician education. I am personally very thankful that we have had the opportunity to participate in a proven, evidence-based collaborative that has demonstrated an improved quality of care for our patients,” said Ajay Wagh, MD.
