Baptist DeSoto officially breaks ground for new ED

On March 27, Baptist DeSoto hosted an official groundbreaking ceremony for its new emergency department (ED) expansion project. Baptist DeSoto Administrator/CEO James Huffman opened the event, followed by remarks from Baptist CEO/President Jason Little; Dr. David Hooker, emergency department medical director; and Mississippi State Senator Chris Massey’s wife, Cathey Massey.

Baptist is investing $19 million into the expansion, which will effectively double the square feet as well as renovate the existing space. When complete in 2018, the new ED will have 20 more treatment rooms, a new CT scanner and greater mobile technology. “Our commitment to this area goes back 30 years, and with our patient volume growing, we need more facility space,” said Dr. Hooker.

Little echoed his comments, reminding the audience that 10 percent of patients are admitted through the ED. “Our emergency room is a place of first resort,” said Little. “This is a significant project for us.”

Cathey Massey shared her personal story regarding her husband’s heart attack and treatment at Baptist DeSoto. “I am thankful to say he’s still here today.”
